Concerns over asbestos contamination have forced a popular dog beach in Perth’s north to close until further notice, after erosion caused by last week’s wild weather exposed dangerous debris beneath the sand. To ensure the safety of beachgoers, the City of Joondalup announced that Hillarys Dog Beach would be off-limits from 1 pm today, following the discovery of building debris and other hazardous materials along the shoreline, as well as the formation of steep embankments across much of the area. It’s believed the debris comes from old beach shacks that once lined the coastline from Whitfords Beach to Pinnaroo Point between the 1950s and 1970s, which were made from asbestos sheeting and corrugated iron.
